Took it out to the local airfield to give it a proper flight. Got it into the air into some wind, and for some reason it stopped responding. I lost sight of the control lights, tried to stabilize it ..... but it was off to the races. Finally disappeared on the horizon, and because I couldn't see it, didn't know which way to stick.

In desperation, hoping the GPS would take over, I shut down the controller.

After waiting five minutes for it to appear on the horizon, we half heartedly took off in search of it. We drove around for about 15 minutes, and didn't see anything. On a whim, we went back to the airfield.

And found it, landed pretty as a picture, about 40 yards from where we launched. As promised, it returned home.

Thank God.

Wow -- its like you were there! :)

I had pulled the camera off as my son was going to fly for the first time.

I think he might have graduated to full time pilot!

1xShot's recreation of the events had me dying laughing. I could picture it. I have been there before.

@mattograph, are you using a DSLR or go pro/action cam on it?

He was spot on.

We finally got up the nerve to go back out today -- returned to the scene of the crime. This time we followed AMA rules to the letter, and kept the quad at about 50 ft. Had a ball.

Slow and steady.

Glad you didn't lose the quad. Are you using GoPro with it or something else? I'm looking at the Phantom as well.
