Maybe I am just not getting it.

Tried to take a super close-up (macro) of a frogs foot, no really. It was one of those suction cup like feet. I could not for the life figure how to get a close-up focus.

Had camera in auto and switched to P mode macro, still couldn't get the focus.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Well, for maximum macro you need to zoom to a wide-angle lens setting. You won't (it seems paradoxically, but actually technically makes sense) get as "close" to your subject at the telephoto settings there, because the lens just can't extend far enough.

you can get 0cm on the lens with the object of the SX40.
Problem is, it has a rather wide wideangle. So it doesnt seem to be as close as on a (for example) 35mm cam. If you want to zoom closer to it, you have to stay away at least 30cm from the object. because as soon as the zoomlenses set in, there is no 0cm distance
for the macro anymore. So the macro for the SX40 isnt as good as it could be (see SX50).
But there is a solution. you can buy a "Raynox dcr-250 super macro snap-on lens".
With that thing you can zoom very very close to small objects, even with a certain
distance (140cm for full 840mm zoom).
Here is an example video for it:
