The first one looks like you used too slow of a shutter speed and got some blur as a result OR it is slightly OOF.

The pictures seem to not have any EXIF info since they are uploaded to photobucket. What lens and body did you use?

on the first one I used a 70-200 2.8 L, and since I was out birding, probably even had the 1.4x extender on it, not sure. was using a crop camera for the extra range, a T3i

with the second shot I used a 24-105 L and 5D Mk II

thanks for the feedback!

First one is not actually out of focus. You've got camera shake of some sort. Probably need a faster shutter speed...

Agree with comments about #1. #2 - she looks slightly OOF on my monitor and her eyes look dead. You need to make sure there is a catch light in each eye, either from a flash, reflector or add it with software. She is such a lovely young lady...keep practicing and post more.

This doesn't give you extra range, only a narrower field of view.

Same end result, a photo that appears closer than the same lens on a FF camera.

yep, you are right. I went back and reviewed the EXIF

ISO 100 f/4.0 FL 280mm but SS only 1/80

that is under the 1/focal length rule by a good bit, and with the weight of the 70-200mm and 1.4 extender, guess should have bumped up the ISO to 400 at least

thanks for the help!

yep, she is lovely, thanks

I am beginning to wonder how good Photobucket is for posting these shots, they look sharper on my computer than what you folks are describing. Is there a problem with Photobucket softening images? Is there a preferred site to host forum posts? thanks in advance.

here is shot directly uploaded to POTN. I took the image into PS and added exposure to the catchlights that were there, just very dim.

Is this any better?

ok, semantics

but I agree with swampler, same end result
I can get 5200 x 3600 resolution at 320mm effective focal length or
5200x3600 resolution at 200mm real focal length

what is the resolution of the full frame with 200mm lens at same crop field of view as the 320mm effective focal length?

don't know what you call it or what the camera folks at Canon, Nikon, etc call it, but I call it "range". If anybody can tell me the correct term I will be glad to use it and would love to know it.

Ya, way under the 1/focal length rule lol. You also need to take into consideration the crop factor. If you were shooting at 280mm then the shutter speed needs to be at 1/280*1.6 = 1/448 But IS will help a lot so you can go a bit lower than that. I would suggest taking the extender off next time though. For a portrait the crop factor already makes it very long.

Photobucket will also soften your images quite a bit. I would either directly upload to POTN or use something like 500px or flickr.
