Hi again,

Long time ago i didn't post here to ask.

One friend called me and asked me about a camera for a group or company they want to use in photojournalism and events covering and conferences and such, and they are open for which camera to go with, the budget is not much open but they have good high if it needed.

I told him 1DX and 5D3 will be my first choices, but 1DX is the winner for me, i don't want to recommend him very expensive camera and later they blame him and also he blames me that the camera is overkill and too much good and not necessary and maybe cheaper option is better, but i really wanted them to have a camera that can last longer, also the body is weather sealing and the battery is bigger and it can handle heavy work, 5D3 i am sure they want another battery and battery grip maybe and not sure about high ISO against 1DX at worst lighting conditions.

So, what do you think?

If events, PJ, and so on, then definitely the 1Dx; when you need to get the money shot, 12 fps and a huge buffer with a 1000x card could be the difference between getting just the right moment or not. Spending a couple thousand more bucks on something that could decide things like reputation is a small price to pay.

Also, people love seeing big cameras with grips, shows that you mean business...

A 600EX flash with battery pack could help when fast flash is needed, even with 1Dx's crazy high ISO capabilities, sometimes you just need fill light.

On the other hand, if you go the 5D3 route, you can get two cameras, and have something like a 24-70 on one and a 70-200 on the other to cover everything you need without fumbling with lenses.

If your friend or anyone else for that matter is a competent photographer, they will never blame their gear for being overkill, unless you gave them a Hasselblad lol.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

I agree completely with the above assessment.

Now I agree the 12fps helps tremendously but on the buffer my buddy with his 1000x lexar card has no issues with hitting the limit, he can take some 40 frames before he his his limit. Just something to ponder about.

Well, i will print the specifications comparison of both and give it to my friend and then he can tell them the difference, after that they can decide which one to go with, if they care about budget then 5D3 is not wrong at all and it is a great decent camera.

I am happy with my 1DX, but the only thing that i wish to have 5D3 over 1DX is the more mp, so if i shoot landscapes i really don't need High ISO and high fps and not even faster AF, here the most factor i need on shooting landscapes or some cityscapes is more mp.

Yeah, 4mp difference will be hardly noticeable for anything other than landscape shooting, so it's all about speed, and where do you suppose these images will end up? A4s for the trophy wall? jpegs on a website? to be honest, your friend could get an older 1-series and still have a very competent camera, but it really should be a solid and fast camera in any case.

Do ask him what flash system he intends to use, 6/12fps is fine for bright-ish spaces where you can get a good exposure and dof at ISO1600, but if you're pushing 6400, chances are that the light is inherently bad, and needs flash whether or not your camera has a clean ISO6400.

If you need a good "ok, sold!" motive, check this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ab7ntX1FBhA (external link)

I say it depends on the type of event/conference. If its something like the G8 summit etc... then yes, 1DX. If its something like the local high school production, 1DX is overkill.

Tough to decide for others, they can change mind or change budget, so one time they are fine with 1DX and later on they only have a budget for 6D or 5D3.
