For decades, one of the most useful microphones on the market has been the Electro-Voice 635, (external link) which has offered a good combination of sound quality and durability.

However, that doesn't mean that this is the best unit for your use. First, you need to know exactly what you're going to do with the microphone, from the distance to the sound source, to whether you're going to record ambient sound, to whether you're going to record a specific person's voice.

There's a good chance that a directional microphone designed to be attached to a camera's hot shoe (external link) will be the best choice for you.

However, sound choices are far more difficult and involved than video and lens choices. You'll probably be better off if you go to a store such as a RadioShack to research what microphones are available in your price range and learn what you really need. Effective audio for video is very complex and difficult.

Exceeds your budget by 29 dollars but it's one of the best budget mics.

I use it and love it to bits.

Here's a video i shot with it.

Office shots were with the mic mounted on a mini table tripod and the crew interview shots with it mounted on the camera 5-10 ft from the subject. There is a bit of hum in the 2nd shot because the office had a really, really loud air conditioning system.

And as with all mics (doesn't matter if it's $100 or $4,000), the closer you an get the mic to your sound source, the better the quality.
