When I have my 560 II turned off on my hotshoe the camera will not take a picture, it just gives me a Error 99. If the flash is on it will fire normally.

Just when I have the flash turned off(on the hotshoe) it gives me the error.
If I use another flash the camera fires normally even if it's off.
The issue is just when using the YN560.

Odd. I almost never have flash on-body (YN560 and YN460ii), but haven't had any issues when I have. Of course, if it is on the camera, it is on and not off.

Curious to see if anyone else has had that issue.

I have a number of YN flashes, and have not seen your specific problem....I would avoid that condition as it is a sign that the YN-560 is not off and is presenting an electrical load to the camera....It could cause damage to the camera...Essentially the Flash when turned OFF is either providing power to the camera through the hotshoe interface or the camera is providing power to the FLASH. Either is not a good condition.

Thanks 110yd! I looked up this problem and found someone mention something similar as a safety sync, but the 560 II is known to be safe for digital. I tested the voltage prior to even using it, I'm going to test it right now to see if it's giving off power while off.

I just tested the flash with my multimeter and it's not giving any power while off, the hotshoe is also not giving off anything.

When on the flash only gives off 4V.

In an effort to try and clear things up, you would need to look at the pins when the FLASH is on the Hotshoe and turned off. I have no idea what design rules the folks at Yongnuo followed, but when dealing with battery powered widgets, it is VERY EASY to get in to trouble design wise....A signal that is an input or an output can accidentally provide a path for current to flow if proper design rules are not followed....In your case, the flash is turned off, but I suspect that there is a path through the I/O of the flash that provides a low impedance to the signals in the camera....You would not be able to detect this type of issue measuring the voltage on the FLASH alone.
