Took the first photo on an overcast day. Went back the next day and he was sitting in the same tree calling. I think it's a merlin and I'm hoping to get some in flight shots when I have time to stay for a while.

The head looks right, and it has the white line over the eye like the merlin I got earlier this year, but the color looks really light. Maybe a different color phase? Pretty bird, love that second shot.

Ya he's very light and that overcast day made him look even whiter! Thanks for the comment.

Yes, a prairie race of the Merlin.....wonderful photos. This time of year most raptors are faded or "washed out" making them quite paler than normal.
