AKA Hummingbird Moth. Hyles lineata

I'm stoked about these shots for a couple of reasons: a) I haven't photographed this critter before, and b) they were taken in near total darkness, and the 5DIII + Speedlite AF assist beam nailed focus everytime.

1. For lighting I used a home-made Pringles can diffuser on a 580EXII.

2. There was a window of only about 15 minutes... between late dusk and total darkness... when these moths were active around the flowers (Dwarf Bottle Brush).

3. I used Manual settings, one-shot AF, and a 100mm f/2.8L @ f/11

4. The first time I saw one of these moths darting around at a local nursery, it took me a few moments to realize it wasn't a hummingbird.

Sure is a beautiful moth, Moose. Difficult shots to get, taking all things into consideration; I think you did great!

Supposed to be even better with the new firmware (when using the Speedlite's AF assist beam). Still on the fence about updating it, though.
