Ive had my 603c's for over a year now. Now I finally want to use them and found that HSS isn't compatible with them? I didn't think it mattered with triggers as just tell the flash when to fire and the flash sets the HSS?

Am I doing something wrong?

If not, can anyone recommend some cheapish ones ($120-150) that are HSS compatible.. not worried about ettl

Thanks

yn-622C. I use them and they are awesome.

To be able to use HSS you need a flash capable of HSS and triggers capable of HSS.

HSS requires an eTTL connection. You do not get eTTL with $30 triggers.

I'm looking at the 622's as well, Lucas. You can get a pair for around $80, and singles are around $45 from what I've been seeing. There is a nice thread here dedicated to them if you want some more info:

CliveyBoy (OP in that thread) has a great user guide in his sig.

Doesn't quite work that way. There is a bit more communication between the camera and flash then just "fire" like basic triggers can do.

If you want to do HSS off camera you'll need triggers that can do HSS (like the yn622). Those triggers are also ETTL triggers as just manual trigger are not set up to offer HSS.

Just my guess, but I'd be really surprised if HSS didn't involve the camera sending the shutter-speed duration to the flash, so it would know how long it needs to sustain the pulsing. A simple "fire!" signal won't cut it, since the flash has to know to a) shoot multiple bursts for b) a specific duration.

Am I doing something wrong?

Nope. It's the way the triggers work. They are manual-only. Even though all five pin/contacts are on the triggers (the one in the center of the square is the sync signal), the only use the other TTL pins are put to are for 1) identifying if the unit is on a camera hotshoe or on a flash to set Tx/Rx mode, and 2) wake-up. All the other TTL communication goes unrecognized.

You want HSS? You have to have an HSS-capable flash and TTL-capable triggers. The YN-622c, as everybody's telling you, is probably the way you want to go.
