I'm guessing you shot these using the 'food' setting in SCN mode :)

Ha...hilarious!

I can't remember the last time I used one of those modes. This was shutter priority set to 1/4 sec.

good images? You must have a very high standard to only call the images from the 40mm "good":

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1198048

My personal opinion, is if you have the SL1, and you don't get the 40mm, your doing it wrong :).

Think of it as a body cap that takes great photos.

OK:

The 40mm f/2.8 currently retails for $199 without rebates.

The 50mm f/1.8 currently retails for $125 without rebates.

The 40mm f/2.8 is nearly twice as expensive as the 40mm. The 50mm, on the other hand, is less expensive and faster (1.8). Putting aside the 10mm wider view and STM motor (both of which are not important to me), why would I want the 40mm?

Amazon has the 40 f/2.8 for 149 right now with free shipping; no rebates, 110 for the 50 f/1.8.

Pros of the 40: Build quality; smaller size; AF system being *much* faster and more consistent; especially in low light (where the f/1.8 would be most useful)

Pros of 50: Slightly cheaper; f/1.8, ?

It comes down to what you value; but don't misrepresent the comparison.

So, my 35 F2 arrived tonight and I had to take a few shots...

If anyone is looking for a nice small travel case for this camera try this out (external link). I've just grabbed one and it works great. I have a smaller version for my G1-X.

If anyone is interested, Apple just released a system update to decode RAW files from several new cameras, including the SL1 and T5i.

I'm impatiently waiting for all the parts of the SL1 kit to show up so I can give it to my wife all at the same time. I'm still waiting for the used 15-85 to show up. It was sent USPS and I have no idea if it was sent priority mail or regular post. I'm sure it will get here eventually, but I'm anxious to get the kit into my wife's hands. Our actual anniversary isn't until the 15th so I have some time, but if I'm able to assemble it all before that, I'll give it to her early.

This is my current camera case, with the 40mm attached:

I store it in that, and throw it in my briefcase.

I handled one in a store yesterday. For being such a small DSLR, it's pretty ergonomic. Decent/good grip too. I can definitely see a market for this camera.

I presented my wife with her new SL 1 yesterday afternoon. She loves it and I'm actually quite impressed with the images it produces. The menus are intuitive and other than a few things the 60D has that the SL1 doesn't, like ISO in 1/3rds, faster shutter speed, higher fps , etc, this camera is not a horrendous compromise. The smaller size is something my wife appreciates.

While you cannot manually set 1/3 stops for ISO, i believe the camera will do it in Auto ISO mode.

Max SS for the SL1 is 1/4000th sec. As a practical matter, I can't think of a situation where I would need a SS faster than this. In most cases, 1/1000 is plenty.

What I would like is a faster way to move the AF point, and a less awkward way of doing Exposure Comp. Seems like all the Rebels need a two button press for these features. But other than these, I'm liking the SL1 very much. For me, the benefits of small size and light weight outweigh these minor faults.

tgara,

I didn't mean to dis the SL1. I'm very impressed with it and more importantly, my wife loves it.

I did pay the geek tax and paid list price for it, rather than waiting for the price to come down. It was only $50 less than my refurb 60D but in the end, who cares? My wife will get hundreds of photographs by the time the price drops.

I do apologize for coming across as negative. I think the SL1 is the perfect camera for those wanting a full featured camera in a small package... much more viable than say my G12.

No worries! I simply wanted to clarify a couple of the points you made. I did not take your post as negative on the SL1. I agree with you that the SL1 is a full featured DSLR in a compact package. It's a great choice for many.
