Thanks to everyone in this thread I finally gave in and got the SL1 (100D here in the Philippines) last weekend. haven't had ample time to play with it because of the rains. Got the 18-55 kit lens and hoping to get the 40mm soon. Been shooting my 1 year old daughter and 1 month old son and hopefully I can post pictures soon.

This is my first DSLR and I'm really digging the little guy. It's light and easy to carry around everyday.

I could use your help, if you don't mind. My wife loves her SL1 and uses it quite a bit. I noticed when we change out the battery, instead of a totally black full battery icon, we get totally white with black lines. As the battery drains, the display goes to partially black with the white part representing how much has drained... the black, how much is left. Is this how your battery power display works?

The manual shows completely black when the battery is full, hence my question. It doesn't seem to affect the operation of the camera at all. I'm probably just a tad too anal about stuff like this.

Your help would be appreciated. Thanks.

That's great....and they say the AF system can't track anything....

What lens? The 70-200 f/4 I assume? My wife has an SL1 and I've been thinking of getting her a 70-200 f/4 non-IS if our daughter does soccer this year so she can take some pics when I'm not around.

Believe it not, the 70-300 non L, AF was on centre spot only and it is very fast.

About any camera can track a larger bird swooping, it really matters how well the user can maintain the AF point on the object in question. This was more about the person tracking the bird and much less about the AF tracking the bird.

Great pic, but I think it says more about the person personally.

Kim, I think what you describe is the normal readout. Since the battery display is on the rear LCD, it shows white with black lines for full. Here's what mine looks like on a half-full battery.

Your description and photograph show exactly how my wife's SL1 is working. I can relax now. Your answer was much better than what I received back from Canon tech service.

Text in a manual (page 36) is usually inverted from what an LCD shows, since page backgrounds are typically white where LCD screens are black.

Like some of the people in here, am thinking of getting this for my wife (who currently prefers her iPhone to my 6D so am trying to wean her off that), and also as a back-up / portable body. How is the 18-55 compared with the 17-40L? I know there's a slight weight difference, and the price between the body and the kit isn't that all that much, but since I already have the 17-40L I could put the money saved from getting the body only towards the 35mm prime I've been thinking about, if only I can figure out which one to get (L, f2 IS, Sigma) or something else. Going from 40mm to 55mm (64mm to 88mm FF equivalent) seems like a lot though.

The 17-55 f/2.8 that people were drooling about earlier in the thread is also mighty nice, but will probably be somewhat overkill for the wife. Unfortunately primes aren't an option - otherwise the 40mm would be perfect, or I could also dual purpose my planned 35mm - as she likes the option of zooming in and out to compose.
