I have really loved the beauty dish sample thread, and I also love umbrella shots and really, I haven't seen sample threads for just that. Reflective umbrellas could have their own thread as well. I love the soft light fall off of a shoot through and would love to see this thread grow. I watched a vid on B7H a while back and the guy said if he were on an island and could only have one light modifier that it would be his 60 inch umbrella, the kind with the cover for both shoot thru and reflective. He said he could collapse it and get a kind of beauty dish light, as well as various other styles from just that one modifier and said it would truly be his choice if he could only have one. I'll start it off.

One of my first shots with a 430EX through a 43". Had just unboxed everything to check it out and the little one wanted to pose while she took a break from eating chocolate :)

Wow, awesome shots already. These are just what I was hoping for. I think many of us take the cheap, shoot thru for granted and forget that the soft light from these things is just as unique as other modifiers like the beauty dish. Many times you can tell shots can only be from a shoot through because of that super soft light fall off.

I can't wait to see all the great shots to come. Here's another of my daughter and her boyfriend, 1 shoot through, 43 inch, in my bedroom. At first, I didn't like the wB as I thought the softness of the light fall off made it seem strange. But as icontinue to look at it, the white balance has now grown on me and I used light room to just bring up his face a tad to give a kind of glow, and I really find I am enjoying this shot more and more. To me, it's a classic shoot thru shot.

I use a shoot through a lot because I have a bracket where I can mount 3 speedlites. Combining 3 speedlites in HSS mode allows me to have enough power for good fill light while getting my shutter speed high enough I can shoot with shallow DOF.

Some really great portraits here. The chocolate girl is great, there's Cherry Garcia with the geetar, and the baby about to eat the downed tree...all great shots.

Very cool shots. What's so cool is that my two 43 inch shoot thrus cost 6 dollars each. Amazing light modifiers for that price. I notice you guys are using these outside a lot more than I would have had the courage to. I see now I need not be so afraid of experimenting outdoors with mine. I have always been afraid they would take off in the wind or the frames would crush in even a moderate wind.

Also, I notice the further back the flash is from the inside of the umbrella the softer the light seems to be. Same for the closeness to the subject. When I get it really in tight the light fall off is super soft. Great stuff folks.

Your rationale for not using them outside is the reason I do. At $6 (I get a bit better built, but still cheap) if I ding one up I toss it and pick up another. There are windy days where they dont work, but on those days nearly any modifier is an issue.
