My POV from living room where I shoot to the bird baths has about a 12" drop at about 8-10 feet distance. I would think fast shutter speed is key, but perhaps there are other apsects I am missing.

I try to keep the baths clean and full of fresh water. Some hang out longer than others leaving very little time to get the shot. Any tips offered will be greatly appreciated as time is usually not on my side when it comes to capturing birds bathing

If it matters, shooting with 50D Tamron 200-500mm (70-200 2.8 + 1.4x is just not enough reach).

Thank you.

It's a waiting game just like regular bird photography. Get to know their habits and routines and that takes time and patience. Experiment with the shutter speed....showing movement is good (slower shutter speed) along with freezing the action (fast shutter speed).

I enjoy bathing bird photos and I also shoot with a 50D. A lot happens in a short time window with bathing birds. I shoot AI, continuous mode and look for the perfect frame on my computer. No way can I time the shutter release for the best image. I also like to stop down a bit for more depth of field. Having the sun behind me is critical to capturing the color and the water reflections. Of course, it helps to get lucky, too. This Tennesse Warbler is one of my faves:
