This is the first Bee that I have been able to capture that turned out so so, I just finished the final modifications to my pop up flash defuser and went out to the back yard to try it out and the first subject landed a foot away and stayed for several shots, I am not sure but I think the final mods to my defuser worked, let me know, C&C always welcome.

Nice shot. Looks like the diffuser works well ;)

I'm not 100% sure, but what you may have there is a robber fly bumblebee mimic. There are several types... some look less like this than others... but this might be one.

Edit. Looks like Denis beat me to it while I was trying to do some research. :D

Wonderful capture. I'll disagree with the others- I think it's a hoverfly Volucella bombylans var plumata

Super shot. Can't confirm what the species is although my initial thoughts were also Hover/Drone fly :)

After looking at more images, I believe Brian is correct. Sorry for the misidentification

It's not the first, and likely won't be the last

Regardless, it still a very nice shot!
