So I have seen lots of great e-sessions using chalkboards. Decided to look for some. There are 0 local places that carry them and not many places online carry what I see you guys using on here.

So my question is... where do you buy your chalkboards... and what size do you find works best?

Why chalk?! Why not small white boards with dry erase pens...you can get them in the Dollar Stores!

I found a picture frame that I liked, then picked up a can of spray "paint" that makes a chaulkboard. I replaced the glass of the frame with a thin hard wood .... it works great. Also created a chaulkboard in my woodshop for easy note taking right on the wall :)

Did the same thing in our new kids room, wasn't fun though on something that large, very messy, wouldn't cure right, have to put on several coats. A smaller thing like what you mention would be great though. I even think you could pick up a small whiteboard and use that spray (3 coats or so) on it. Rustoleum makes a spray.

I have found the surfice under the spray makes a big difference, I first did it on the glass of the picture frame, and it did not write very well, so going with a wood back made it a little softer, chaulk writes much better. Lots of light coats vs fewer heavy coats is also a good trick. My board in the shop is like 4x3 feet so decent size.

I built a smaller one a few months ago for our kitchen. Took a thin piece of plywood and attached a sheet of galvanized steel to it from the local hardware store HVAC section (so we could use magnets on it), used latex metal primer and latex chalkboard paint. Did 3 or 4 coats I think and let it cure for a few days then stuck it in a wooden frame. Broke it in rubbing chalk all over it and wiped it clean with water. Works like a champ! Will get a picture tonight of it.
