Hey Everyone :)

I just got my very first MacBook Pro this week. I’ve been a photographer for about 6 years now using PC, and doing just fine but after my PC started giving me RAM errors on every single photo that I was trying to edit, I decided it was time to finally make the switch.

Besides the initial phase of LOVING my Mac, I’m running into some issues in PS6.

The biggest issue is that what I see visually in Photoshop, is NOT what I see visually after I’ve saved the image.

I had a black and white image last night that I saved every which way I could think of (PNG, Save for Web, JPG, etc) and each one had a blueish tint to it.

I had another image the evening before that looked rich in color, and then upon saving, it was all washed out.

I’ve checked the conversion on each image to my camera output, and they both are set to ADOBE 1998.

So my questions are:

1. Is there any sort of Photoshop Calibration that I should be doing before I get any deeper into editing on my Mac?
2. Does anyone know what would be causing the coloration to not match what I see in Photoshop?

Any help or advice or direction would be GREATLY appreciated!

_ K

Are you seeing the incorrect colors when uploaded to the web?

Sounds like you aren't converting to sRGB before you save for web use. Photoshop will save the image in whatever color profile you're working in (AdobeRGB) unless you convert it to another profile before saving. AdobeRGB, ProPhoto etc. won't display correctly online.

So, it sounds like you open an image in PS and do whatever to it and like the way it looks, in PS.

Then, you save it in PS to some format.

Then it sounds like you view your newly saved file outside of PS and, from what it sounds like, the image you are viewing outside of PS does not look like it did in PS.

Questions:

1) What are your color settings in PS?
2) When you save in PS, are you choosing to embed the color profile of the image as it designated in PS?
3) What outside application are you using to view the file?

Most applications in the Mac OS are color managed/color aware. Images that have a color profile embedded in them and are viewed in an application that is color aware will display correctly online. You may be viewing and editing an image in aRGB in PS and then saving it in a form that strips or otherwise does not embed the color profile tag - if the outside application that you use to view the image ASSUMES sRGB, for example, then your image will not display correctly - that is, the image numbers will be in aRGB, but with no color profile tag to tell a color aware application this is the case, or an application that ignores this tag and ASSUMES sRGB, the aRGB numbers will be interpreted incorrectly.

If this is the case, convert your image in PS to sRGB (Image > Convert to profile...) and save and see if this does the trick.

P.S. - This is not a Mac-specific issue or concept.

I would guess this one. Make sure you're embedding the color profile so that it will look the same.

Thanks everyone.

And Kirk, yeah I didn't think it was a Mac issue necessarily, just wasn't sure since I know Mac’s are color managed.

1)What are your color settings in PS? How can I check this?

2) When you save in PS, are you choosing to embed the color profile of the image as it designated in PS? … I don’t think I've done that. I did try to do Convert > sRGB last night and it didn't seem to change the blue tint, but I will check.

3) What outside application are you using to view the file? I was checking on my iPhone

Have a read:

Use sRGB for web, embed the profile.
Use a browser with decent color management (Firefox) or maybe Safari or a new version of Chrome (?) and the images will look identical on your screen (and "as expected" on other screens).

Oh, and forget about "checking" anything on an iPhone. Calibrate the screen of your Mac, and trust that.
