So I just purchased the 100mm 2.8 IS macro lens the other day (new from Amazon). I had already seen discussions of the lens making noises before I made the purchase. However, now that I have the lens, it's making more noises than I expected.

I'm reading that multiple people claim that their lens is silent except for the very faint IS noise.
Mine is making a buzzy sound when I press the shutter halfway. Then the sound repeats a second or so later.
The lens is silent when the IS is turned off. (as I expected)

Any thoughts? (particularly if you own this lens!)

The noise you are referring to is just the IS mechanism kicking in?

Yeah, but I didn't expect the noise to be so "violent". Particularly after reading other people's comments on the noise on threads here and on other forums.

I have never heard a sound like that coming from a 100L. I am not sure what it is, but that definitely is not what my lens has ever sounded like.

Mine does the exact same thing. I think that noise is just the noise it makes when it starts and stops the IS. If you hold the shutter half way so that IS is engaged the entire time, then the noise after that initial buzz is much quieter and different sounding. You let go or press the shutter, a short bit later, the IS turns off and buzzes again.

Sounds normal to me.

Of course it will be more noticeable if you are testing it in a quiet room on purpose.

Wait until you use a 70-200f4 IS, it's even more violent ;)

Yep sounds normal (on both my 100 and my mate's).

And yep, the 70-200 f/4 IS is much worse :P

Sounds normal to me. Those who say their lens does not make a noise when the IS starts and stops, either have poor hearing, or a much smaller lens. (like the 18-55)

Alright, I guess I'll stop worrying about it and start taking more pictures.
Thanks everyone!
