I am looking for a picture style that will give me a 'raw' look(like the videos came from the blackmagic)

I've never used one of the flat looking profiles. so what does everyone use, and why?

But hey, they say it's not the gear right:rolleyes:

You're never going to get a blackmagic look from a flat dslr profile...8 bit 4:2:0 pretty much gives you a well defined ceiling for your maximum image quality and dynamic range. When I use my 5d for weddings or whatever I usually just set the contrast all the way down. I think the superflat profiles out there actually do more harm than good, but that's just me.

I've not used this (yet) but, it seems really good.

I don't recall which profile it was, but I've seen videos and photos taken on the 5d2 with flat profiles that looked to be quite close to the raw black magic files. Now, of course you get more latitude and everything else with the BM, but it looked quite similar. Really really flaaaaaaat

Be careful of the quest for "flat." It's not the holy grail you might think. The raw files out of the bmcc are actually very contrasty until they are graded.

I suggest reading the cautionary note here:

A NOTE ABOUT USING FLAT PICTURE STYLES:
The purpose of using a flat picture style while shooting video is useful if you plan to color grade the footage in post production. The picture style is not intended to be used as an in-camera method of color. You will notice that the Crooked Path Flat picture style will make the image very de-contrasted. This is done by editing the gamma curve to record detail in the shadows and the highlights that would normally be lost. This gives you ultimate latitude in post for color grading a beautiful finished movie.

BE CAREFUL!

There are some downsides to using ANY flat picture style. If you planning on adding some serious contrast, you will notice noise and artifacts in areas that have a gradient texture like sky or walls. You will see a phenomena commonly referred to as “banding,” which is essentially the artifacting in the compressed H264 codec being ENHANCED…which is not good. What is happening when you shoot flat… is the compression creates, for example, 15 steps or shades in a gradient instead of 40 that would normally be there if you shot with the NEUTRAL picture profile. So when you grade this flat video and add contrast, the software doesn’t add more “steps” to the gradient bumping it back up to 40…instead it just contrasts the 15 steps that were recorded. This creates a more drastic difference beetween step 1 and 2, and 2 and 3, and so on. The result is enhanced artifacts and “banding.”

While I would certainly try it I agree with the above comments of caution. It can be very difficult to get Cinestyle back to an agreeable image in the edit. This can render the footage almost unusable in some cases. Skin tones seem to suffer most (perhaps because of the reduction in gradient information as noted above) making your subject look as if they have a skin complaint as you try to grade back.

Noting the above, while not entirely a one click fix the "Vibrance" filter in HitFilm Ultimate does an extremely good job in brining the footage back.

I appreciate the caution, but if I were to have a job, I certainly wouldn't go in using a picture style the first time. I would like to do some tests. If I find it to work great for me, GREAT! If the test shots come out horrible, it gets deleted.

Give the magic lantern guys a bit of time and it may no longer be an issue, since they're working on raw video output right now. . . . . . . .

I MUST be blind. I don't even see a link in your post. I see a link in Charro's post and its for a "crooked flat" picture style, not cinestyle. I think I'm tripping... I'll just figure it out when I get to better Internet.

We can only hope for the best. But as of now, thing aren't looking to good for recording bigger clips.

Place your cursor over the words "Technicolor CineStyle (external link)". They should be a different color denoting that it is a link and will probably show an underline when you put you cursor on them.
