So now that I settled on my zoom lens (EF 28-135mm), I need a wide angle lens.
For my price range, I narrowed down the selection to these two,

Canon EF 20-35 F3.5-4.5 USM
Tamron 20-40 F2.7-3.5

I noticed Tamron 20-40 came in two versions, so is the one with gold ring on the barrel the new version? And do both of these lenses reflect focal length on FF body or for cropped body?

Thanks in advance for your help guys!

any zoom that begins at 20mm is older than dirt. pre-digital. a better lens on the cheap would be the 18-55 IS.

But 18-55 is for cropped sensor only (and I already have one) so I figured 20-35 & 20-40 would be the most affordable option for me to achieve wide focal length on my FF body while maintaining fair sharpness. My main concern on Tamron was incompatibility since as much as I love my Sigma 90mm Macro lens it only works on wide open aperture on my canon. I also looked at Canon EF 20mm f2.8 but I wanted more versatility at this length so I am leaning more towards either 20-35 or 20-40.

so you've got a FF body?

then go for a 17-40L...
and if that's too much I'd look at a sigma 15-30mm, or tamron 17-35mm...

The focal lengths printed on all lenses are the true physical focal lengths. Thus they reflect the focal lengths on an FF camera.

Although I do not know from firsthand experience, I found a few (external link) different (external link) websites (external link) where someone claims that the gold ring is the newer model of the Tamron lens.

Personally I would also get the Sigma 15-30mm if I were aiming for something cheap. Sigma also released a 20-40mm f/2.8 (constant aperture!) a while back. If I were spending more money I would get the 17-40 f/4 L ($550 + tax refurbished from Canon) or the Tokina 16-28 f/2.8 ($700 right now after rebate).

I had the Tamron 20-40 and it was pretty good. Nice range for a FF body.
