Can someone please tell me why, when I size a picture small enough to be uploaded, it shows up as a very small size? Pictures from others, supposedly also within size limit, fill the screen.
Here's an example. It was accepted after I made it below 150KB.

Thanks

The best solution is to use an image resizer. Process the image as normal and then resize the final output. Prish Image Resizer works like a charm. You should be able to find that and a number of others via Google.

Others are posting pictures from external sites like Flickr, Smugmug or Photobucket to name a few.

So, a resizer such as Prish does it differently and uploads to a larger size than does resizing in PS CS5?
Many of the larger uploads I'm seeing are there with the text, no linking to click on.
I do use SmugMug, but don't know how to create a link than works.

there's two "sizes" to keep in mind - the filesize (to keep under 150Kb) and the picture dimensions (to keep under 1024pix on the longest side)
adjusting one doesn't affect the other...

I Smugmug hit The Share Button in the upper left corner, then hit Get a Link, under photo links tab hit the size you would like to post. Probably a medium or large. Copy that and paste it in the forum by hitting the Insert Picture Icon (Looks like a mountain with a sun). Put that between the text where you would like to insert.

In photoshop, if I increase picture dimensions the file size increases accordingly.
If I uncheck 'resample image' I can enlarge the picture with no file increase, but of course the resolution and picture quality goes away.
I'm apparently missing something here, for I'm seeing many large size, quality pictures opening with the text in forums, with no link to smugmug, etc.
What am I missing?

I just tried to link a pic from smugmug. Pasting onto 'insert link' did nothing visible, but when I used 'additional options and pasted on 'attach files', it did work.

You don't want insert link, you want the yellow icon next to it Insert Image.

You're missing the "quality" setting. When you save a file to jpeg format it's compressed, and the default compression of Photoshop is (I think) highest quality, which means largest file size.

The quality level can be brought down quite a lot, making the file much smaller, with no loss of viewing quality on the screen.

If you want to make a large print you'll want to use higher jpeg quality (less compression) for best quality - but you can't see the difference on a 1024 pixel image on the screen.

Can we use Photoshop to achieve the same goal? If yes, how?

I rarely post images here because of the same reason, they become small crappy picture if I resize it to 150KB. I don't like to use external photo hosting sites.

I just resize a 7MB JPG file to 1024 pixels (width). The height automatically changes to 683 pixels. Set quality to 2 while saving. I got a photo with crappy details. If I increase quality to 3, the size is larger than 150KB and won't upload.

You can do it in PS. Use the "Save for Web" feature. Set the image size you desire...(Max size here is 1024px and then adjust the quality until the file size is reduced to less than 150kb.

That's why most of us post outside the forum so we don't have to downsize and compress our images. Many free photo hosting sited available to upload your photo's and "link" to. There's a thread all about it somewhere around here.
