1. Black Widow from last night. These don't bother me; I can typically find at least five in my yard on any given Spring/Summer night.

2. Horse Fly, taken this morning. One of the bugs I truly hate. Funny thing is, by instinct I ran in and got my camera instead of killing the bastard. I'm sure he'll make me pay. This one was so big that when I saw him buzzing around, I though it was a carpenter bee (which are huge here).

I believe you are correct. The one that bit the hell out me the other day must have been this:

http://bugguide.net/node/view/409569 Western Horse Fly. The one I photographed did look shinier than this critter.

Thanks for the ID. I had no idea hovers got that big. Guess I'm glad I didn't kill it.

Thanks, I illuminate them with a flashlight to focus, and it doesn't normally bother them.

Be prepared to move quickly if you're getting up close and it suddenly disappears from the viewfinder. It tends to raise the pucker factor.
