Yes it is. I should get the 24 to match my 40 pancake

The 24 blows the 40 away. I sold my 40 and stuck with the 24 2.8 & 50 1.8 stm

I agree, Blake, the combo of the 24 and 50 gives a better set of focal lengths than having a 24 and 40 (plus the extra speed of the 50).

Does the 24 STM have the same slow, loud focus motor as the 40 STM? Or is more like the 50 STM (which is still audible, but at least its faster). The 18-55 STM example is dead silent and very fast to snap to focus (faster than the 50 STM actually it seems)

Very best,

There are two types of STM implementations: direct drive (10-18, 18-55, 55-250, 18-135) and screw drive (24, 40, 50 mm). All screw drives are slower and louder than direct drives. I have all three primes at the table right now and they sound the same. Actually 24 and 40 are identical, 50 has a bit higher pitched sound but basically it is the the same.

*Cross posted from the 24mm Pancake thread. Thought the SL1 thread would like some attention too! ;)

Took a road trip up to St Ignace Michigan (we live near Grand Rapids/Holland Michigan) and went to Mackinac Island and Mackinaw city.
Took my favorite travel combo with me, the Canon SL1 and Canon 24mm STM Pancake!
I like to get a little more creative when editing my personal photos. Sometimes I experiment with new techniques. These are a few of the photos.

For those of you who don't know about Mackinac Island, - the only way to get around on the island is by walking, bicycle, or horse

I usually shoot this combo in manual, auto iso, and set my aperture at 2.8-4. Usually just leave the shutter at 1/500-1/1000. I don't really care about grain when traveling - more focused on capturing the moment instead.

The rest of our trip and more 24mm + SL1 photos can be seen here!

Been using that combo quite a lot in our trip to France in September. A great travel set and you make it shine! Also a very interesting place.

Thanks! I love it. I just wish the SL1 had wifi to connect to my phone for mobile uploading and remote

Hi everyone!

It's been quite a time I didn't post anything here ;)
I have been on a recent trip to one of the most charming places I have ever been, and have experimented brining only two primes (50mm 1.8 stm and 24mm 2.8 stm), and an UWA (10-18 is stm) . The choice has been perfect : light, good for urban usage, and possibilities for low light (the 10-18, despite not being fast has good IS and can shoot 1/2 second without worries without tripod.

Here is some pics I took .... will be uploading a bit more to flickr the next days, if someone is interested, will post more ;)
