I dont really get the point of this camera. I just saw it listed on Adorama's website and hadn't heard of it before. Is it just the components of an SLR crammed into a smaller, lighter body? Did they drop anything to fit it into a smaller package? Sensor size?

Read all about it.

It is essentially a "mini Rebel".

Long story short: They managed to nip and tuck it to decrease the size and weight, but it is effectively the same as a T2i/T3i/T4i/T5i. Lenses all function as any other crop sensor Canon.

The point is to make a Small Light DSLR, as opposed to a mirrorless camera. So you still have a mirror, optical VF, and physical buttons/dials...just in a smaller package.

Thats pretty cool. Looking forward to checking one out in person to see how it feels in real life. The smaller package could be pretty cool from a portability-standpoint.

Thanks for the link tgara. I was on the standard SL1 Canon site, but was trying to compare specs and stuff to see if it was any different. didn't see that page though.

the point of the camera is having another backup camera in your backpack as a back up... also, it auto focuses in LIVE VIEW with ALL LENSES!

great for movies.....

I received in the mail last week a fancy printed brochure from Canon that describes the SL1/100D and the T5i in detail. Did anyone else get this brochure?

It's the print version of the brochure that can be found on Canon's website here: http://www.usa.canon.com …ebel_T5i_SL1-Brochure.pdf (external link)

Nope didn't get one. The pictures in here shows just how sharp this camera can produce with the right lens.

Took the SL1 to a car show on Saturday. Nice size and light weight when I did not want to carry my 1Dx. Sharp as a tack when attached to my 24-105. I was really impressed how good the APS sensor performed. I would highly recommend as a walk around or travel light weight body.

Rented an SL1 for the weekend in Yosemite. I like the size and weight a lot. The touchscreen focus was accurate and fairly quick in good light. Focusing with the OVF was very fast. Even in the house with only window light it still was very quick to focus. A 15-85 would have been the perfect travel lens for what I needed.
I was pleasantly surprised and found it functioned just as expected if you are already used to Canon UI. Light small lenses work very well with the SL1. Even the 85 1.8 feels nice.

Nice review of the SL1 BrickR. We would love some see some pictures you took with that lens. BTW, Yosemite is a beautiful place to capture breathless scene. After all Ansel Adams basically live there capturing beautiful images.

I would like to use this camera as a backup and travel camera. Does anyone know if you can tether it in Lightroom or thru Canon software?

Jim

With wire. Yes. Without I'm assuming you probably will need a third party wireless system like eye-fi wifi.

Thanks for the photos here - convinced me to pick one up for my significant other. She's been wanting an SLR for some time now to step up from her compact camera, but didn't really like the big (her words) camera that some of her friends use - AKA 600D!! She loathes the size of my 6D/40D. I was looking at getting her the EOS M but that just didn't feel right - too complicated with different lenses and adapters and crap.

The pictures here speak volumes - she'll love it with the 40mm I picked up at the same time.

Once question though - what's the battery life like? Anyone have any experience with third party batteries for it? Thanks!

I had to admite that the Canon SL1 with the 40mm is TACK Sharp, but with my expensive Sigma 35mm f/1.4 is super soft wide open.... if i stepped it down to f4 then the results get better...

on my 300mm f4 it sharp and with my 70-200 @ 2.8 is sharp.
