Help! my 60D won't recognize ex580ii external flash....
the camera is brand new....my ring flash is working on it no problem at all...
the ex 580ii works on my canon 5D mark ii but when I try to put it on my 60D, it won't work.
In the settings it says that i can't work the internal flash because it has an external on it but the external settings won't work!!!

what is the problem?

There's a tiny sliver pin on the hot shoe mount (located under the silver spring). When that tiny pin isn't push back up the camera thinks there's a external flash in the top. Many 50D and 60D owners have this problem. Grab a small sewing needle and see if you can pop that pin back out. That should do the trick.

But his problem is that the camera does sense that the flash is there, but it can still not communicate with that flash. So it's the opposite.

Disregard the comment above. Instead, make sure the contacts are clean and make good contatct in the hot shoe. If that doesn't help, find someone who also have a camera which can talk to the flash, and see if it works there. Try another flash on your camera. That way you'll learn if it's the flash or the camera you should focus on fixing.

Just use the finder for taking the picture instead of the live view .

It may be that the 60D hot-shoe setup is slightly different than the 5DII, and more pressure is required when inserting the 580EXII in to the shoe. The waterproofing skirt hides the problem from view.

Place the 580 in the 60D, and before moving the lock lever from Unlock, place your thumb on the back of the 580 foot and give an extra press. You may hear or feel a click as the two rear pins of the flash ride up and make contact with the rear contact pads.

I removed the skirt, and rarely get the problem now.

I tried retiring, but gave it up - it's a dead end

Using a stone instead of a hammer for driving in a nail is about as relevant to this thread too.
