As I posted earlier, I just ordered a Canon 7D. I'm very excited.
I am currently a T3 rebel user. I've managed to take 5000 photos in about 4months.
I started using the default file (example: IMG 001, 002 etc. ) for a cataloguing system.

I don't want to click the shutter 5k times on the 7D to go in sequence that i have. I'd hate to have to rename 5k files. Is there a way to start the 7d off at let's say (Img 5001) or have it's prefix use different letters in camera by default so I don't end up with duplicate file names.

I hope I''m able to convey what i mean by this post.

Since the 2.0 firmware update released summer of last year, it is possible to change the file name prefixes:

Better yet, you could start storing your images in folders that MAKE SENSE. For example, have folders labeled "Travel Photos", "Family Photos", etc. Inside those folders, make other folders such as "2013 trip to Texas", "Bob's Kids 2013", and so forth. Put the appropriate images in each folder. Make new folders for images that don't belong in any existing folders. Do all this, and you'll really be able to find images that you're looking for.

+1 I have folders organized in lightroom for individual events. This also helps when your file numbering re-loops (will go back to 0001 after 9999). So, you will eventually have duplicates. I shoot close to 1k photos per week, so this happens to me quite often.

All of my photos go in to folders by date, so no problem with number re-looping. All of my sorting is done in Lightroom. By using collections, and especially smart collections based on keywords, the images can be sorted by many different categories. Even better one image can be in multiple collections, yet one only needs to have one copy of the file (excluding backups of course).
