I have always kept a Canon Digital Elph in my purse for when I want something better than my cell phone, but don't want to drag a big DSLR around. I've always bought good quality cameras from Canon's Elph line up, but lately just haven't been happy with what I've gotten. Lately, I tend to take a lot of pics at the curling rink and low light is a problem. So I made the switch to Sony and just bought the Sony RX 100.

So far, I love it! It's a bit bigger than the Elph line, but still small enough for the small pocket in my purse, but it is the features that I'm loving. Specifically, that it shoots RAW files, and does well in low light. I can bounce the flash on it, which i LOVE, as well as alter the flash exposure. Those features are exactly what I wanted in a tiny camera. I'm not nuts about having 20 mega pixels to store and process though, but I can deal with that. The sensor size is larger than most compact cameras, so having 20 mp on a small sensor isn't an issue, and I was concerned about that. Very happy with it.

I'll post some pics when I get a chance to learn a few more functions and put it to the test!

Not sure what you wanna tell us with it. The Canon Ixus/Elph series is a totaly different
camera category than the Sony RX100. The Ixus/Elph are Ultra Compact point and shoots with super small sensors. They have no manual controls, and are actually the lowest entrylevel category of all canon digicams.
The RX100 is a Advanced Compact Camera with a much much bigger sensor.
So those both cant be compared. You rather can compare it to a Canon Powershot S100/S110. Because they have a similar camerabody size. And it also has a bigger sensor.
Still not as big as the RX100 though.
Or you compare it to a Canon Powershot G1X. it's the high class Compact camera of Canon.
And the sensor size beats the one of the RX100. Its almost as big as a APSC sensor of a DSLR. Those are the cameras you can compare the RX100 with, but surely not a Ixus/Elph.
Thats why i dont really get what you want to tell us with this topic.
No offence

I'm not really sure either. I'm just thinking out loud about my new toy and my husband listens to me talk about it and gives me that "so what's your point?" stare. He doesn't understand my excitement over a new piece of gear, but he's not a camera guy, so I "talk" about it here. You just reacted the same way he does. LOL.

haha maybe you got me wrong. the RX100 is a nice cam.
But to me it sounds a bit like you want to say "canon sucks" with comparing a Advance digicam with a cheapo ultracompact camera. thats not really fair to compare them.
btw. ALL Powershot and Ixus/Elph cams can shoot in raw as well with CHDK :P
Canon has alot of real competitors to the RX100. Anyway..
If i would poop money, i would probably get a RX100 myself.. or even a RX1 !
Of couse they are better than any Ixus/Elph camera.

A similar comparison along these lines would be a LaBron James/Danny DeVito jump ball at center court, just sayin' . . . ;)

Well done! It's the experiences and imAges that matter.
I get the same response at car clubs when I switch brands.

That's ok. ;)
