I have the 3 Custom Mode settings created for my 5D III, basically they are all Av modes, with different ISO's and settings for outside, inside, and low light.

When shooting outside this weekend with my 1.2 50mm, it really started to bug me that when I would set the F stop, after the camera would power off, the next time I used it it reset to F1.2. Now, I can save a new setting for something with a smaller aperture, but I wish the camera would remember my last used settings, and only reset back to the registered settings if I switch the mode dial out of C1, C2 or C3 to something else and back.

There is an "auto-update" feature, which I think will just save any changes I make to the C modes, and while that will probably work, it doesn't give you the comfort of having locked in settings you can snap back to at any time.

Anything I'm missing?

Auto update remembers your last used settings for any C mode, but unfortunately will not reset back to your original registered settings when you change the dial. Your idea would be a great little feature.

Yeah, this is a bit annoying. I have C3 setup for action/soccer and everytime it powers off/on the setting is reverted back to ISO 100 shutter 10 and f2.8 or something like that.

I'm not sure if it just started happen with the new firmware or it was like that with the old one too.

@Ryan0751 it sounds like you'd just be better using Av mode if the only thing different in you custom modes is ISO. That way it remembers lasted used settings and ISO is quite easy to change(push button spin wheel vs push lock turn dial).

Personally I have mixed feelings about an auto-update on C modes. I like that it goes back to the base settings I chose which should be close to what I want/need if I had changed something previously for a shot that ways out there's good chance it won't work the next time. On the other hand if I have the settings for a certain condition then stop shooting it for a bit then go back the same previous it would be nice if the settings were still there.

@sonnyc you obviously have poor settings saved, maybe you should resave C3 with shutter/ISO/aperture at numbers that are close to what you'd normally use or at least be good to get the shot in most conditions(something like Tv-1/1000-autoISO or M-1/1000-autoISO-f4).

Have you tried disabling the auto power off function?

Cheers

Well I knew that was an option, but it's not a good one for me. I really like auto off :)
