Hi all, I am mostly into birding so my camera has telephotos on almost constantly. Looking for a good PnS for nature\landscape. I was considering the G1X and S110 but they are widest at 28mm\24mm equivalent only. Looking for something wider that has manual mode, can take raw images and has good glass(I don't know how to judge PnS glass, am I expecting too much from a PnS?). CP filter compatibility would be nice. Preferably Canon but I can go for other manufacturers as well. I can spend about 500USD but can put in more if required. I am opting for a PnS over a second body because I also need something to carry around events and occasions where people stare at DSLRs and ask annoying questions, not necessarily pocket fit though and the primary use is still nature\landscape photography. I don't want to go EOS-M.

Any suggestions please?

Hmmm i would say its almost impossible to find something good below 24mm.
The widest i know is the Samsung WB210 with 21mm.. but the camera itself isnt
that much of a burner.

If you are primarily looking to do landscape/nature, then why not shoot two or three shots and merge to a panorama? I do that frequently with my G9 which starts at 35mm wide.

Thank you for the idea Dennis, I will try to learn the technique.

Thanks Mike, maybe I will go for one of the S or G series. Awesome flickr gallery btw.

PowerShots don't have an automatic panorama feature.
Most Lumix, Coolpix and Cyber-shots do.
The LX7 is a great option for that matter.

It's not "rocket science" as they say. Here's some simple tips. I shoot full Manual to set exposure, and use the gridlines on the LCD to align horizontally, and use the vertical grid to show me where I will have a 1/3 overlap between shots. I then can stitch using the Canon supplied software, or my Photoshop Elements 10 software. Others use something like Hugin. I generally shoot hand held shots.

Here are a couple of recent panos taken using my G9 as described above.

Six landscape oriented shots

Three portrait oriented shots;

Edit: I also find using ultra-wide lenses introduces lots of distortion issues. This is mentioned in the linked article. I also find the sweep panorama built in to newer cameras has it's limits vs my simple method.

Thanks, and I agree with your signature statement; Practice, practice, practice. Another thing we all should do is delete, delete, and delete images that are not "keepers". This is what my wife keeps telling me, but I don't practice deleting very much...
