I find this sad. I do not wish to pay $20 a month forever so I can use Photoshop.

Lots of displeased users over on dpreview as well, seems as though Lightroom is unaffected though.

This makes me not-so-shy of furious.... IF it affects Premiere. I'll use my (FREE :D) GIMP for photos. Some aspects are easier to use than Adobe's products anyways. The only thing that I want the pro version of from Adobe is Premiere.

Sell your Adobe stock now.

Because people like me can't afford the subscription prices. I occasionally have extra money so can afford a one time charge for a product I can use essentially forever, but I can't afford to sustain a subscription model for software.

The few monthly fees I have to pay, I minimize as much as possible.

If forced to go with the subscription model, I would probably just store up my photosets and then rent PS for the month, do them all at once and drop the subscription again. It would be even cheaper then buying it.

So if you haven't guessed, I hate the idea of subscription only. I like it if it is an option, but not if forced to only use subscription.

Agreed. I have never owned Photoshop (Lightroom and Photoshop Elements do enough for me), but I would definitely find an alternative (Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, whatever) rather than sign on to a subscription for any Adobe product.

I've resisted upgrading my cs3 because of the current price structure, going subscription only makes it worse. I'm guessing Adobe thinks that Lightroom is sufficient for non professionals and that they can force pros into this scheme based on necessity. But for me there are still things that Lightroom doesnt do, but I cannot justify the subscription. I'm hoping to snag a some cs5 on disc and lock myself in before the change.

This is like Apple releasing a flip-phone. It's hilarious to see each persons outrage that I've read, and knowing that Adobe will go under if they don't switch!

I cut my teeth on photo editing in PS Elements in high school and then afterwards I acquired through my college copies of CS2 and CS3 I found that for the most part it was general simple things I was doing to my photos (selective colouring, using layering tricks, B&W conversion, blemish removal etc) and once I found LR I basically looked at PS and uttered a big MEH! With that said now being a loyal LR user for the last few years I am seriously worried about what will happen to Adobe should they continue on the path they are. Only thing I can see happening is professionals and the people that essentially keep the company going leaving in droves. Oh well I guess worst case scenario I can use GIMP or Dark table or any number of linux alternatives

Photoshop will still be industry standard so they'll have that, but I've got to think that this will create an opportunity for some of the other editing applications to offer something similar for less money and gain some market share. I mean c'mon Adobe, I only use like 5 different adjustment layers in your program and a couple filters. Can't you cut me deal?

wow, I'm really thankful I picked up CS5 last year when I did (hooray for student discount!). There's no way I could afford to pay every month to use it.

Why do you think Adobe is moving to subscriptions?

Yeah, software piracy is a victimless crime?

Enjoy!

FROM VP at adobe:

Is a subscription model less prone to piracy?

While service options that connect to our servers are inherently less prone to piracy, once a user downloads software to their computer the piracy threat is the same as for our perpetual products.

The reason behind the subscription-only move is the logistics of supporting two sets of software. The last 12 months of development was brutal. And there were results we were not happy with. We have decided to focus on the CC products.

As far as the future of CS applications, in his Adobe MAX keynote, David Wadhwani said, 'We have no plans' to continue perpetual licenses. We are not ruling that out in the future.
