So what is everyones favorite lighting solutions for rooms that dont allow bounce flash? Im shooting in a venue this weekend, very high, dark ceilings. I dont even own any flash modifiers aside from some softboxes. So do you all use demb flip it etc, multiple off camera flashes, direct flash or what? I think Id like to use 3-4 off camera lights but since Im only second shooting, I dont want to interfere. However, I HATE direct flash, even with modifiers. Whats a man to do?

For events, I use Demb Flip-it, gel it 1/4 CTO if needed, and crank up the ISO to 1600-2000.

I've been looking at maybe getting the flip it for
times like this. Thanks for your opinion.

I like the Flip-it. Still meant to bounce, but it does better than direct flash.

There is also another one with a bigger diffuser...I cant remember the name of it right now. Its like the size of a small square dinner plate and flexible with wires inside holding it up?

I only had that situation once and I used a slaved speedlight as a rim/side light and the on board one as a fill/trigger.

I love modifiers though, would have been better to have a beauty dish on.
Mine is not portable unfortunately, the Orbis is next on my list.

I never know where the link is, but I just made my own foam flash reflector for ~$2. Works great.

if I cant bounce, I tend to use my Wedding light-stick (2x 580exII), with a 24" shoot thru umbrella..Underexpose ambient by 2 stops and shoot at an angle to the light.

first pic shows the room ambient with no flash, you can see the flash and umbrella to the right rear of the room.

next pic is with the flash..:D
camera settings 1/80th @ F2.8 iso 3200...It was a dark room.

Try to get a couple of pocket wizards and use off camera flashes if you can't bounce it off anything.

Why not just bare flash when faced with that much darkness?

Well, thats kind of a lengthy answer. Bare flash, wont properly expose a subject and light the details and people behind the subject. Plus, it looks terrible. :D

It's the Rogue Flash Bender. The bigger size out of the two they have is pretty good.
