Neat Image and Noise Ninja are good, and both can be used as plug ins.

Very true, but LR is also quite good and has the advantage that you don't have to break the parametric workflow. However, what I like about Neat Image (I don't know about Noise Ninja, but I think it has something similar) is that it will analyze a sample, if given one, like a section of wall, that should be solid color so the only variations are noise, and apply NR according to what it found. You can even do analyses of your camera at different ISOs and save them as presets. Also, (if it means anything to you) Neat Image converts your image space to the YCrCb space in which Y is a luminosity channel. It is likely that LR/ACR does something similar using L*a*b* space in order to isolate luminosity noise from chromatic noise, but LR/ACR provides only one slider on the UI to control color noise reduction and NI has separate controls for the Cr (similar to a*) and Cb (similar to b*) channels.

Yes, Noise Ninja does the same thing. Both programs get very good reviews. Noise Ninja has changed format, though (I think they even changed the name slightly). I can't remember the specifics, but I visited their website a few months ago, and it now appears to be noise reduction software plus a few other tools. . .i.e. I don't think you can get just the noise reduction application without the other stuff.

As stated, Lightroom does an admirable job, but if I'm shooting at a very high ISO, I'll typically use Noise Ninja instead of Lightroom. Subjectively speaking, I seem to have better results with Noise Ninja, and I'm sure it would be the same with Neat Image.

I have the Noiseware Pro plugin for Photoshop but with LR4 I never use it any more.

Last I checked Noise Ninja was incorporated into a new RAW converter. I don't know if they have plans to make it a separate plug-in or standalone.

We used to use it all the time with our 1D II & 1D IIN bodies, now not so much with the Mk IV.
