I'm sure there a plenty here who have done this, who do you suggest to use? Do they hold the entire cost of the lens for their protection and then refund when returned or just the rental cost amount?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I rented a Canon 6D and the 50/1.2L from lensrentals before decided to buy the combo. I did get the insurance. Nothing went wrong. I suggest visiting the various rental sites and reading their FAQs to have their specific policies provided. But I don't recall paying lensrentals any additional money for collateral, fwiw.

The usually charge you the cost of rental and insurance if you opt in for it... If you do not return the lens, or return it broken, they will then charge you the full replacement cost.

I rented from LensGiant last summer and I thought it was great. Got the 17-55 2.8 for a trip along with a polarizer since it uses a different size than anything I already had. Very smooth transaction; I'm planning on renting from them again in a couple months. I did not purchase the damage waiver, but in retrospect I probably should have and will most likely do so this time.

And no, I don't think they held any extra for a deposit or whatever, but since they have your credit card info, they have the ability to charge you if the lens doesn't come back or comes back and is damaged or whatever and you didn't get the waiver.

Thanks for the responses. Just to clarify why I ask about them holding additional funds, don't like using my debit card when they do this because of the availability of funds. I will have to try this out so I can decide what lens I want to go after next.

Just the cost of the rental and shipping, no deposit as long as you're shipping to the address on the credit card.

Haha, that's exactly what happened to me-- I fell in love with that 17-55 and have been shopping for one ever since but wow that thing is pricey. You get what you pay for I guess! Still, a nice way to try out equipment that I'd otherwise never be able to play with.

I know that a few places will either require you to have insurance and or they will put a hold on your account if you rent an expensive item.
