Is this sticker normal? I found this sticker on the back of my Sandisk "bogus" (see above link) 1 GB memory card. Does this look legit to any of you? Anyone else have anything similiar? A tech at a camera store noted how he had not seen any sticker like that on any Sandisk before.

On a side note, it has been confirmed that the memory card is labelled as a 1GB card, but infact only has 499MB of formatted memory (tested in several card readers, and several digital cameras). Ebay bastards!

Thanks.

I've not seen anything like that before.

Sandisk cards typically have a code on the back (for SD) or the edge (for CF) consisting of two letters, four or five numbers, and two letters (some older cards omit the last two letters). There's also usually a mark relating to the country of origin. Finally, Sandisk cards seem invariably to come in a little plastic case.

I have a 1GB (standard blue type - not Ultra II or Extreme III, which are both typically black) Sandisk SD card here. I was sent it for review purposes by someone who I believe received it directly from Sandisk, and it came to me in the plastic case without the outer packaging. The typography on the front label is slightly different and the label is well adhered all round. The back contains the markings I described earlier, and no sticker.

I've attached pictures.

I'd say the card you have is bogus.

David

The front of the card looks patterned in the "case" shot, from some kind of flash artefact - see the attached for a more realistic picture.

Hi David,

I had used your picture (with the serial number) to show the Ebay auctioner the difference between a real card and the one I had purchased. The auctioner is apparently going to give me a refund because she "does not have any 1 GB memory cards left".

Thanks for your help guys. I hope I get a smooth refund lol.

P.S. I am surprised that nobody has asked yet, but the member I am doing business with is named "Marita317" on Ebay. While she has 100% positive feedback, I'll leave it up to you if you would like to deal with that individual in future dealings. Just a 'heads-up'. ;)

P.S.S. The card did come in that plastic case, but I had removed it for pics.

So, you got a relabeled 512 MB card that isn't even a Sandisk one, and is probably the cheapest 512 card the scammer could find. It's actually surprising they didn't go for broke and send you a 16 MB card and rip you off all the more. The Sandisk cards have a serial # on the back exactly as shown by DavidW. It's quite a scam, and I hope you reported them to both EBay and the police. This is actually mail fraud.

Here is a list of links for reporting fraud from the EBay discussion board:

I didn't bother asking the name, because I don't buy memory off ebay. Never would.

you bought a defective product. You should return it to the store for refund. if it doesn't work , you can call tony soprano who can apply some muscle persuasion on the store manager. :)

It's not a serial number, actually, but a combination of date, an identifier relating to the generation of the technology inside (the first letter after the digits, at least on SD cards, is called a "Technology Code"), and some other things that I don't know how to decode. I noticed the Ultra II CF card I have has five digits in the number - no idea how that works out.

I'm glad my quick and dirty pictures worked. They were manual focus and handheld so that I could do a quick bit of focussing by moving the camera in and out. For the two close-up shots of the card, they're shot at the focus limit of my EF 24-70mm f/2.8L as I don't have a proper EF macro lens. They're all really done with slightly too small an aperture (f/16 would have been better than f/11).

All that said, for a quick bit of macro photography with flash (580EX, StoFen Omnibounce, bounced into a white ceiling), I learnt a lot, not least that, if I do eventually buy a macro lens, a focussing rail is a useful gadget to have. If you look carefully, you can tell where I focussed (on the . of 1.0 for the face, and on the text on the reverse.

Given the choice, I would have grabbed the family Ixus 700 (Powershot SD500) that we have here for these shots, but someone else has it at the moment.

What gets me is that on the fake card, the font for GB is completely wrong, and the 1.0GB goes far too far across the face of the card. The label doesn't neatly fit the recess on the front of the card, and - though it could be your white balance - the colours look wrong, especially the red, which isn't a brick red. The paler blue is more of a sky blue shade than cyan, and the edge between the paler blue and the darker blue is sharp on the genuine card.

I didn't ask the name because you posted a link to the auction in the other thread. lol. I do think it's curious when someone has kept their feedback private though, although this one has 100% positive so it's less of an issue. I'm nosy I guess.

It sucks, but I did get a refund.

Also, I guess I haven't learned my lesson, because I am looking at purchasing another memory card off of Ebay (they're so cheap!!!!!!!!!!!!).

It's a 1GB, but it's in it's original Sandisk cardboard package. The seller has 100% feeback, and will warranty their product. Plus, I'll be insured by paying with Paypal. How can I lose ... or so I think !

just buy thes type of things at a store, its no use trying to save a little cash, only to pay for it down the road, who knows how old the card is, een if it were a "Real" card, it could be corrupt or just dead. Id rather spend a little more and get the piece of mind.

I dont go for "bargains" from Asia - the inventors of the imitation Rolex. Buy from the US or Canada. Curious what you paid for it though. If it was $20 or $30 ok but I found a lot of these cards are a bargain until you pay US$20 for them to mail it to you. Might as well go to a local store.
