Just back from a church shooting, and at a certain time I noticed my 70-200 was making a very strange, grinding noise. I turned off IS and it went away and as far as I can tell did not come back. I had this same lens before and never even heard the IS. I've also noticed the zoom ring is not quite smooth, has a bumpy feel to it (like gears grinding too). Do I have a dud? It's a new one, so I can always send it in for repair but I wonder if this is normal with the newer batches.

Sounded exactly like this : http://www.youtube.com …er_embedded&v=N-DHjNApsl8 (external link)!

My older 70-200/F2.8 never did this, even after 1000s of shots.

Mine did it a few times the other day. It was the first time I heard this noise, but meanwhile everything has gone back to normal.

Mine does it too when you hold it at certain angles with the IS on. I just figure it is either the IS bearings being loaded, or it is at the limit of travel for the internall IS element. The lens functions fine and I have shot 10s of thousands of images with my MKII since I bought it right after it was announced. I would not worry about the noise unless you start seeing other problems. BTW, other Canon IS lenses I have also do the same thing.

I bought one at the start of April that made the exact same noise. Swapped it for a different one and haven't heard the noise once.. I'd send it in.

Mine has that noise as well every once in a while. Been to Canon twice and they say it's normal. Canon rep said it happens when the IS system doesn't dock in the 100% correct spot. I don't like it but I'm guessing they know what they're talking about.

;) I must be hard of hearing!

I now feel like I'm missing out on an extra IS confirmation feature of the: simply the most amazing/versitile optic in my bag(s) . . . damn it - why is it that the other guys always get the extra-mojo-dynamic of this prince of lenses - and I always get the dud ?!?!

Mine did that exactly same sound when I bought it, 2 weeks of use after and the sound disappeared, didn't know what the problem was before and don't know now since it stopped doing that, never had the bumpy feeling on the zoom ring.
If it's causing you problems take it to the shop, better sooner than latter.
