The study of spiders dates back to the first British expert, Dr. Thomas Muffet who lived from 1553 to 1604. Some believe it is his daughter, Little Miss Muffet, who sat on a tuffet in the nursery rhyme. (Although the name and subject fit the verse, there is no clear evidence of a connection and the verse was only printed in 1805.)
