Still Trying to Figure out LAX...

Some shots from a game I covered today. I never grew up playing/following lacrosse, so I'm still at lost to the rules and find it very difficult to anticipate where the action will be. But my editor loves covering the games, so alas, I do my best. I wasn't allowed behind the goals at this particular field, so that made it even tougher to get anything good.

It's a great game...but rules are interesting!...especia​lly in the women's game with "free position" shots. That's about the only situation where you can really anticipate the action. Even knowing the game still requires that you know the usual attack strategies favored by the program. Bowdoin (in your general area), for example, has a very different offensive set than Connecticut College which, again, is quite different from Tufts. When they play each other, as in the NESCAC championships this past weekend, I have to carefully think about that fact when taking images for both teams or for the conference. But all that takes time to get to know the teams.

Many locations will not permit shooting from behind the goals, especially in the men's/boy's game where there is an obvious liability issue. One college I know had a women's program where the coach insisted they have allow a specific photog (family member) behind the nets but the school would not approve it without a series of signed waivers, etc. My favored position is along the sidelines slightly behind the plane of the goal. Here I can use a 70-200mm or a 300mm effectively as players twist and turn in an effort to find an open shot.

You have posted a nice set of images here, especially #3 and #6. I might crop #3 a little tighter out of respect, however. But, anyway, patience rules as it does take time to "get" the game...that I do remember!
