Anyone can advice something to me? Preferably free, but could shell out a couple $ to pay too. Would mainly like a simple, customized home screen with a fullscreen gallery/slideshow.

You might be interested in doing a search for "Wordpress Photography Themes" and choosing one of those. You'll find more than you could ever want to compare in free and also onetime fee to purchase themes.

Definitely agree with the wordpress themes that you can get for free. Great for SEO as well. Check it out.

Apparently wordpress does not allow custom themes, any hosting (free?) which is to be approved?

You need to pay for hosting and get wordpress and a theme. Its only like 5$ a month.

There are thousands of free themes here:

Additionally, you can customize any of these yourself, or (with enough know-how) build your own.

Wordpress is a great tool, but if your website is mainly for photography give a try to Piwigo (external link) or zenPhoto (external link)

A few years ago I wrote a blog post (on Wordpress.com) about using Wordpress for your photos: Using WordPress/Drupal/Joomla for your photo gallery? (external link)

Try 500px. If you want your own domain its only $50 a year. Simple and straight forward .
