Sorry but you will have to bare with me on this one as i'm new to C1 and still feeling my way around so to speak, but where in C1 would i see whether i have disabled the sharpening on output?

What i have noticed is that the simulate sharpening settings button has been enabled and that when i disable this the images appear has they do in windows picture/fax viewer i.e soft & unsharp. Does this make any difference to the output?

Ive not got 3.7 running any more but im pretty sure you can disable it in the output tab. I'll have a nose around if you cant find it.

As for how the output looks, What I THINK you need to do is, with sharpening preview on, view your image at 100% in C1. This should give you the same sharpness (more or less) as when you view the jpg output at 100% in image/fax viewer. I think C1 only gives an accurate sharpening preview at 100% so as you have found, looking at the image with C1 fitting it to screen will give you an over sharpened image.

Try this. push the sharpening slider all the way up, then output a jpg, full size is fine. Then open it in windows fax viewer, it will still look quite soft, then view it at 100%. you should then see its over sharpened. Then, without closing it take it back to fit to screen and you should see lots of white spec's. I guess this just shows that you may not be seeing a true image if windows messes with it to fit it to screen. This is why i always output at the finished size if im uploading to smugmug (for instance), hence the 800x532 suggestion. that should how full sharpness as windows doesn't need to mess with it.
This is from memory so i hope it makes sense. Im no expert, its just what i have found.

Dave, i have just tried what you suggested and this does seem to work for the full size images but i don't seem to notice any difference when i reduce the size of the image though?

When i do this but reduce the size of the output image to 800x532 i loose the sharpness even when viewing at 100% in picture/fax viewer.

If you've set the monitor to "sRGB", it isn't calibrated....

OK.
Did you check to see if disable sharpening on output was ticked? Ive just reinstalled C1 3.7.7 and its off by default (so it is sharpening on output).
Its under the Process tab in preferences.
Also thedefault sharpening setting is soft look, maybe you can change that to Standard to see more sharpening.

Adobe RGB or sRGB ?

Neither.
You calibrate the monitor (using a Spyder or iOne calibrator for example), then you get an icc profile. That is your monitor profile. It's specific to your monitor.

sRGB and AdobeRGB are working spaces. If you send images out to be printed, and share them on the web, I'd use sRGB working space.
If you print at home using an inkjet, and understand color management, I'd go with AdobeRGB, or maybe ProPhotoRGB in 16bpc.

You might want to have a read in the link from my sig.

Thanks for all the help so far guys, really appreciate it.

Dave, I do have the sharpening setting set as standard and not as soft look, and i ahve also checked to make sure the disable sharpening on output wasn't ticked and it wasn't.

Rene, Sorry i did mean that my working spaces / colour management were all set to sRGB ( Camera, Monitor, C1, PS) but i still see differences in the colour. When i get chance i will have a read through your thread and see if any of it makes sense to me, as i say i am new to all this side of photography and it may just go right over my head at the moment LOL but thanks anyway.
