The problem is in Australia checked baggage weight limit is 7kgs. The Pelican almost weighs that dry. Chances of having your bag weighed at the gate are a lot lower if its on your back.

Makes sense. Wonder when that will happen in the States. Soon, so the airlines can charge for something else.

I can understand it, I find it extremely annoying the amount of carry on people take on board.

I generally fly in business class so it's not so much of an issue but if I'm doing a BNE-SYD (1 hour flight) I'll fly economy and if I board late it's often hard to find room in the overheads.

Get a photo vest if everything in what ever bag you choose adds up to too much weight, a body or two and your primary lenses packed in your vest insures thay stay with you and are not making your luggage over weight. Airlines are letting less carryon so be prepared.

Yeah if I ever got pinged at the gate I'd just put the 70-200 on the body and wear it around my neck. Problem solved.

I just ordered a lowepro flipside 500 AW to fit my gear for a trip to Europe. Like that there's no access from the back and I can swing it around to get to my stuff w/o taking it all the way off. Thought about a pelican, but I'd not want to drag that around Paris and Germany. We'll see how it works out, I'll have two bodies and a bunch of lenses, flashes, etc. what ever fits. For the airport I have one of those little luggage rollers that'll carry my backpack, my kids backpacks, my wife's bag. Worked great the last couple times and is probably the best $30 or so I ever spent on anything ever :-)

40D, 5D3, a bunch of lenses and other things

Most airlines are still 10 kg carry-on, but some are enforcing 7 kg. With the Pelican 1514 weighing in at 6.7 kg when empty, it doesn't make sense. Not even for the "generous" 10 kg allowance of most local airlines. :)

A lot of the wheeled Think Tank (and similar) bags are also a lot heavier than the non-wheeled alternatives. They end up being almost as heavy as the Pelican case. I'd rather have that extra 2 or 3 kg available for my equipment.

Don't know where you get 10kgs from?

International and domestic both Qantas and Virgin are 7kgs per piece maximum. Not sure about Tiger, Jetstar or any of the smaller regional airlines but I can't see them being any more than the two big players.

Ironically, both Jetstar and Tiger allow 10 kg carry-on baggage. :)

There you go, I have never flown with either of them. I'm actually sitting in the Virgin lounge now heading off to Melbourne with my F stop Loka. It just got even heavier with the addition of the 1D4.

I used Think Tank International v.2 on an overseas flight. Since it was my first experience I initially could not close the overhead bin of a large airplane when I lay it flat (with handle facing out). Finally I figure it out. You have to raise it up vertical to fit in the bin. There was another bag beside mine and so I do not have space to put the bag sideway (with handle facing right) into the bin.

I also carried a large Lowepro with 1d3 and 70-200 2.8 mk 2 and it was heavy carrying them during transit. During transit in Europe I have to enter a special room where they perform some kind of chemical swap on my bags. Is it common to encounter additional security check when travelling in Europe with a lot of camera gears as I do not experience this in USA and Asia?

Safe travels! Have you ever had your bag weighed when flying? I haven't, so I wonder how heavy it has to look before they make you weigh it. :)
