Spider: Not as Big as it Looks

I shot this spider on my bathroom wall near the ceiling the other night. As big as it looks, I doubt it was much bigger than the nail on my little finger.

Shot with a Canon 350D, Promaster 70-300 macro zoom in macro mode with a 20mm extension tube, and a Sigma EF500 DG Super flash on an extension cord with a piece of old t-shirt velcroed across it for diffusion.

That's only the second insect macro I've done. It's much better than my first attempt, which was a few years ago.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the results from the 70-300 in macro mode with the extension tube. I feel a lot less pressure to buy a 100mm macro than I did before.

What you can experiment is some paper tissue or similar as diffuser on the flash, to get a larger light source and not as hard shadows. There are lots of suggestions in the flash thread about cheap home-made contraptions.

I used a piece of t-shirt velcroed around the flash head. Is it possible that I held the flash too close?

Best is if you can get the light area larger. Your t-shirt still doesn't make the area bigger than the actual size of the flash head, unless the t-shirt was held some distance in front of the flash so the light from the flash could spread to a larger part of the t-shirt.

I'll have to look into building one of the flash kimchi rigs that I've seen on various websites. Do you have a recommendation?
