I think this is the 46th thread over the years that have linked to that site ;)

But always helps new readers who haven't seen the link before.

Good resources will regularly pop up as new people discovers them.

But since the information slowly gets forgotten as the threads gets older, there are basically two routes. Thread revival or creation of new threads. In the end, people will not know what to search for if they don't even know that the information exists and may be searched for. So only a thread at the top of the new thread list will give new readers the opportunity to learn.

proper dslr holding technique is right hand on grip, left hand holding lens... that's not going to work too well!

Left thumb can hold the lens, your choice of fingers to shield the glare. Obviously works better on shorter lenses.

And besides, we are comparing to a paper lens hood!

A paper or cardboard hood will not protect the lens/camera if you run into something, bump into something, drop the combo, get caught out in the rain. I pass.

You can just as well make it of plastic - that would at least cover the "rain" part. Of course depending on the actual lens used - if the lens can't handle rain then it doesn't matter if the hood can.

But look around - lots of people use their lenses without a hood because they can't afford the extra cost. Non-L lenses requires the hood to be bought separately, and a couple of hoods accumulate to one less lens bought for the same amount of money. Making their own hood at least means they can do something about the sun, even if it isn't as mechanically robust as an original Canon hood.

I have over 100 lenses in my house at the moment. Each one has a dedicated metal (ok, a few are plastic) hood on it. Forget what Canon wants for the "optional" hood. Lots of good ones on eBay.

I don't use hoods because they a bulky and the situations where they actually provide an optical benefit are few and far between.
