I have been doing a bit of scanning recently. Mainly old negatives but also a few slides. As good as the scanner is I have found that some of the results, if zoomed in, or sharpened, appear a bit grainy.
Would I be right in assuming this is some form of noise and could be removed with the aid of Noise Ninja or Neat Image ? If so could anybody please tell me the best noise removal software.
I am currently struggling with PSE2 and PSE3 so please keep it fairly simple as I am a total dope with PP and computers in general.
Thank you.

Noise Ninja and Neat Image both get great reviews. It appears that Ninja wins by a hair and is described as being much faster. I suspect you will get replies from fans of both programs, and you probably couldn't go wrong with either. They both have free trials so you can see which you like better.

I have also used the one called NoiseWare, which also comes in a free version and performs the same as Neat Image but is 500% friendlier.

I once shot some theatre with 360 speed slide film and the scans were horribly grainy. Noise Ninja cleaned them up magically!

This "one user's comparison" type review may provide you with some useful information.

Noise Ninja is the current gold standard. That does not mean other products are not good; it just means NN is the standard by which others are judged against.
Film does have grain of course. Part of its charm. I use NN on many scans, once you build, annotate, and save profiles, NN provides solid results.

NN and PhotoKit Sharpener are the two PhotoShop plug-ins I do not want to live without; especially to get quality and speed work done.

I tried all the major products, and ended up with noise ninja pro bundle. Lately I prefer to leave the noise in, because there is information hidden in the noise. Get rid of it and you lose detail. It's not quite smart enough for me yet, but I do use it for really bad images (eg ISO3200 which I underexposed 2 stops!)
