I think theres more to a video recorder than the quality of video. not to mention i dont think ML rewrote code for the 5d3 i think they just allowed access to what was already there. kinda like overclocking your cpu. Its all in there already to be used. So you dont think Canon had any idea that the code they wrote for the 5d3 was capable of this...I tend to think they knew. But as my post suggests its all speculation on my part.
It's not over clocking the CPU. The sensor exports a tremendous amount of information, and then Canon's in camera hardware and software turnes that information into a movie file. All they did, was tell the camera to bypass that step, and just send all the information, as the sensor collected it, to storage and then on a computer we will turn it into a movie file.
So they are not asking the camera to collect any more information then it was collecting anyway.
