So I had been using long TTL cables for my off camera work, and they were great - I could easily change TTL and manual flash settings from the camera. Of course being cables I was constantly tripping over them, so I decided to pick up a couple PocketWizards.

I updated the firmware and fired them up, and they trigger my 430ex ii just fine - exposure looks as I'd expect from the TTL system.

However, I can't seem to adjust the flash power. At all. I shoot in Manual mode on the camera, and changing FEC does nothing. Even when I use the AC3 zone controller in Auto or Manual, I can never get the flash to change output. I selected 5D2 in the firmware, and I've tried just about every combination of settings I can think of. Yes, the AC3 and receiver are on the same channel.

I spent 30 minutes googling and can't seem to figure it out. I'm sure it's something really obvious and I'm just being dumb. I can post photos with EXIF if necessary, and you'll see photos with +2 FEC set are identical to -2 FEC. Again, AC3 zone controller seems to be a brick - doesn't do anything at all.

Help!

Sorry to resurrect an old ish thread but I believe the solution may have something to do with having the flash in manual... when using the AC3 you should have the flashgun itself set to ETTL and then set the AC3 to manual... if you set the flashgun to manual it will only ever fire at the one setting :-)

It wasn't the flash that was in manual mode, it was the camera. When using the FlexTT5 with the remote flash, the flash is always supposed to be in ETTL mode for it to work properly. And if I recall correctly, the flash is automatically switched to ETTL mode even if it was previously set to manual when the flash is mounted on the FlexTT5.

That's correct :-) Sorry I misread and thought it said the flash was in manual...

Incidentally, you can put the flashgun into manual once it is connected to a TT5 (at least you can when triggering with the TT1 and AC3 controller). If you do that you can set one flashgun at say 1/16 and whenever you fire the camera, it shoots at that, regardless of settings on the AC3 - turn it up to +3 and it still fires at 1/16. :-) I was using this yesterday when I had one flash on 1/XX permanently as a background light, with another flash on ETTL in the foreground...

Trying to think of when you might use this rather than having the 1/16 on channel A on the AC3 and an ETTL flash on channel B and I can't think of one... so not sure what this is useful for?! I don't know why I didn't think to use channels A + B yesterday!

Maybe if you had loads of flashes (more than 3 channels) and wanted to say fire 3 as ETTL with different FEC (so channels A, B and C) and then one manually at different settings???!! Probably more than I will ever need!
