Bower Grip tripping distance

I have a Bower Grip which I actually love and have come to respect after all day shoots and being able to go so much more time without charging.
My issue now is that I tried to use the IR to take a self portrait and want to use it for a self family portrait but I have to be to close to the camera for it to trigger. Are all of the IR remotes trigger distance similar??
