Bag Advice? LowePro HB 22L AW

We'll be footing it around Seattle so I need space to throw basic supplies in, a snack or 2, and room to spare for a lightweight fleece or similar. More space is always fine, but just need enough so that I can carry a single item and not have both a small daypack and a camera bag hanging off me.

I'm looking strongly at the Hatchback 22L AW, but it is hard to tell from LowePro's site if it'll hold my 600D with grip.

Does anybody have an opinion on this bag? Will it fit a gripped 600D?
Can you suggest any similar bags under $150?

Prefer backpack style but messenger bag would be okay if within the same set of needs.

Thanks in advance.

Well, it seemed like everything I'm needing and I definitely can't take my old Tamrac bag with me, I decided to order the Hatchback 22L AW. If others are interested I'll update or answer questions after it's delivered on Monday.

I think you'll find that the grip will make your camera an extremely tight fit (if it fits at all) in the lower compartment. This will probably cause you some discomfort as you are walking around - unless you put the camera in the top compartment. I bought the HB 22L last week for a trip to Disneyland and ended up leaving my battery grip at home. I didn't expect to use the upper compartment to store my camera but found it to be much more convenient for just that purpose.

In hindsight, I probably could have left the grip attached and just kept the camera in the top compartment for the duration of my trip. Of course, there isn't any real padding in the upper compartment so you'll have to balance the odds of your other nick-nacks causing scratches and such.

Well that's a bit of a bummer. I guess I'll see when it arrives, worst case it's too uncomfortable and I'll just take the grip off until I need it. I'm only carrying 2 lenses with me so should have plenty of spare room in the compartment for the grip.

Thanks for the response, wish I'd waited a couple extra hours!

Grip issue aside, the bag is actually quite well suited for travel/sightseeing. I think you will like how light the bag feels even when it is loaded with gear.

My 5DIII with an L bracket sticks up a little bit and I can feel it in the small of my back, so I doubt a 600D with a grip would fit. But other than that its a good bag (just makes me sweat horribly in hot weather which is annoying and means its a winter bag for me).

I got it in on Friday, ahead of schedule which was nice. It fits a gripped 600D just fine, it may protrude a 1/2 inch or so higher than the camera compartment, however, I couldn't tell - nor my girlfriend. Whether or not this is due to the padding of the compartment lid or it ending up sitting on an air space on our backs, I can't say for sure. But I (6'7") couldn't feel a hint if anything, she (5'5") had an equal result.

I like the pack quite a bit. Build quality seems excellent which I expected. The padding is sufficient in the camera area and shoulder straps. The rain cover is easily deployed and fitted and fits the bag perfectly, which isn't always the case, and finally, I thought the interior space and internal pockets worked well. I can confirm the side water bottle pockets fit a normal, wide mouth Nalgene, though its almost all the stretch the pockets can muster. They're plenty deep for such use but I would not use it for a small tripod pocket, lest its not more than 2x the depth of the pocket or if you attach a Velcro or other loop to the pack body to keep a longer tripod stable. Which would be easy to do if so inclined.

It's a pretty stylish backpack, also. Covered all my needs and wants, so far, and at $109 -/+ I think it's a good value for the size. The interior pocket is pretty small, so not for people who need more space than snacks and gloves or hat, light shirt, or a highly compressible jacket. But for me, looks to be the perfect space for a wind shirt, walk around snacks, phone, wallet, keys, and maybe something small from a shop or market, like a souvenir or fruit.

Ventilation, like you said, kinda sucks. The back panel looks reasonably promising, but on the maiden voyage it sweated out my lower back pretty good. Dried quickly enough, but it was also neatly 90F. A disappointment, for sure, but pretty much my only gripe so far. The trade off is worth it for me, anyway.

Anyway, I'm happy with it and glad I bought it.

Thanks guys.

Anyone know if this bag gets hot on the lower back? If I pull out the bad insert and place a tenba insert will it fit as a top loader to fit bigger lenses?
