Getting a 5D kind of misses the point really.

Errrmmmm....

If FF is the only goal then yeah but there's something unexplainable and weird about shooting an old 1D. A 5D isn't the same. It's kind of "meh" in a way.

From his initial post it seemed that FF was the only goal...I haven't shot with the 1Ds extensively, but I have monkeyed around with a few of them, and there are plenty of things about it (as outlined in my initial post) that I hated...I'll take a 5Dc over a 1Ds any day of the week...plus, the files out of a 5Dc are magical. ;)

To each his own. I don't really think about the weight, and I have three of them. It might be a Freudian thing, I dunno.

Absolutely, a lot of it is a matter of preference, and like all cameras it's a balance of compromises. I had my 1D3 for a year and a half and I have to admit, it felt amazing every single time I held it. The ergonomics of that camera are perfect for me. I'm not a weak guy by any means (I'm 5'10/175lbs, run, bike, work out, etc), but lugging that beast around for 14-18 hours a day when travelling got old fast...introduced neck/shoulder cramps, etc)...frankly, if someone doesn't need the amazing AF and the weathersealing (I didn't) I see no reason to choose the 1D over the 5D, and plenty of reasons to choose the 5D over the 1D (and that was certainly the case for me)...but...the OP bought the camera lready and I hope he enjoys it for a long time to come! :)

Yeah you have a good point. I can do an 18 hour shoot with them but I'd probably be singing a different tune if they were with me for casual/secondary purposes. At the very least I'd force myself to make do with only one.

I wanted a FF but i love the 1D body.. if it was just FF then i could have gotten a 5Dc.

Anyway, i been reading the manual (both paper and .pdf) and i can't for my life find where to set JPEG only, i can pick RAW only and RAW+Jpeg.... anyone know?

Bent Toe,

Do you shoot your 60D with a battery grip and if so, how does the handling compare between the two?

Yea, i got BG on my 60D.. the only difference is the weight. Other than that there are no difference in handling between the 1Ds built-in and 60D's BG.

I take it this is excluding the dramatic differences in menus, and control lay out?

1Ds was the first DSLR ever to be reported to be comparable to, or besting 35mm for resolution.
It is a best of a camera, and fantastic to use. I had it's 4.5 MP little brother (an older little brother? why not? ) and loved it.

This body was such a breakthrough in hardware, at this time Canon was so far ahead of all competition it was in fact, quite funny :)

Well, excluding the menues (ofcourse) it's exactly like the BG on my 60D.
The big dial changes the aperture, the small wheel changes shutter, whitebalance, focuspoints etc.. all the same layout and functions.

The BG-E2N on my 50D feels nothing like my 1D III. Not to mention when holding it my finger is clear of my tripod mount on my 70-200 yet on my 1D III my finger hits it easily. Minor things, but the 1D III does feel a lot better to hold (even if my finger does hit the tripod mount, but I can just rotate it anyway).

Yup...I had grips on both my 30Ds, my 20D, and my 10D...then I got the 1D3. Felt nothing like it. The 1D was on a whole different level. After my 1D3 I got a 5D with a grip, and ended up taking it off (partly because of the unnecessary bulk/weight), and partly because it just didn't feel the same...
