I only see three ant species in the garden- all rather small. Black ants- Lasius niger, red ants- Myrmica sp. and orange meadow ants- Lasius flavus. I only rarely see the meadow ants. Some pictures of red ants feeding on honey dew on cornflower buds still not sure if this is natural weeping or whether the ants damage the buds) and black ants feeding on honeydew on Euphorbia flowers.
The last shot is an old shot of a meadow ant (top) cleaning a red ant (Myrmica sp.)

A very pleasing series, Brian. Especially like the third & fourth shots.

Thanks all for the comments :)
Denis - seems almost impossible not to get fairly strong highlights off that species of red ant.
Shot below is cloudy day natural light (the ultimate diffuser).

you,re absolutely right.we,re already getting harsh highlights from the sun,so a cloudy day would definitely be the best for any shiny insect, especially ants, ladybugs, and jumper eyes.
