Had to share this one here...

I know a local photographer who's been in the business about 25 years. On his website are samples of the various types of photography he does along with his rates. Through his business page, someone contacted him recently with a proposal that went something like this (I'm paraphrasing):

"I love your family portrait work and would like to hire you to do some family portraits of my family. I'll provide you with a memory card, and after you're done taking the pictures, I'll take the memory card home to review them. If I like them, I'll give you $50."

His response was a lot nicer than mine would have been!

I would get the job and take only overexposed/underexpos​ed/outoffocus/badcompo​sed photos...
then after the session when the client say their are not ok I would say his memory card is not good.

will not get any money, but should be fun.

Trolling is always fun, but the downside of this is, that they will not agree, that the card is bad - they will spread the info, that the photographer is bad. And that can cost a lot.

Tell him, sure! But I charge by the hour. $400 per hour sounds okay? - Take the memory card, post process yourself. Win win!

Incredible. The audacity, the impudence, and the insolence of such a request. I would have written a kind response back too. For those who suggest trolling or other responses, I just don't have enough time.

Out of personal curiosity, is this really that rare of an occurrence? Everybody has a camera these days, whether it's a cellphone or whatever - society is accustomed to photography, and cheap photography at that. I would assume this has a consequence to professional photographers, particularly that photographs have lost their reverence, and therefore, their value as well.

Any thoughts from those in the business?

Not to mention acting totally unprofessional and like a jerk.

simply ask who referred them and spam filter two emails.

The smartarse in me would have to reply with something like...
"Sounds good. Please bring a Sandisk Extreme Pro 128 gb card to use for the photoshoot. My equipment requires a specific card of this type in order to produce the best quality images. If you do not have one, you can purchase one from me at current market value."
Then let them see how much the card will cost them

Well I had to look this up to see how much they cost. And at first I found the card for $70 and didn't get the joke. Then I realized it must be a cf card you meant. Looked that up, DAMN! More than my camera and all my lenses cost!

Wow. I would be so pissed off if I see a message like that.

I recently had an email from a couple looking for a wedding photographer, they wanted to me half my rate so they could do the editing and save money.. As if!!

It doesn't really pay to be unprofessional in these instances. Just reply with a 'no thanks, I'm booked solid' and be done with it.
