I'm thinking of taking the plunge and trying hypersync with my older slow duration strobes and some YN622 triggers. It started me wondering about the delay between one strobe firing and the second one firing using an optical slave. Obviously the delay is so brief as to not affect most applications. Does anyone know the length of the delay between one Alien bee firing and a second one firing based on optical slave from the first?

I have tinkered with the same thought process, but have not followed through. I believe the delay will be negligible, but that is based on specs from optical triggers used in other types of electronics. I would generally say the delay on an optical trigger was in microseconds.

With light travelling at just short of 300,000 kilometres per second, unless your Alien Bees are quite a long way apart  you can forget any time lag there. I suppose it all depends on the latching of the recipient Alien Bee. It's gotta be one of those "Suck it & see" arrangements though there's no logical reason why it shouldn't work perfectly.

Of course, you could always cough up for another 622C for your second AB - gets round any propogation delays between units as they'd both get the signal at the same time then. Depends on whether you want to spend the odd few $$ or spend the odd few minutes experimenting!

Phil ǁ Kershaw Soho Reflex: 4¼" Ross Xpres, 6½" Aldis, Super XX/ABC Pyro in 24 DDS, HP3/Meritol Metol in RFH, Johnson 'Scales' brand flash powder. Kodak Duo Six-20/Verichrome Pan. Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

awesome.

reading through that reminded me of a trick i have used to fire optical
slaves with the on-board flash, without it effecting exposure. grab a
piece of unexposed, but developed chrome film hopefully medium format,
and place it over the on board flash. it will block all the visible light but
allow infrared light through to trigger the slave.

cheers!
